Sleep is one of the most basic needs of our lives, and for most of us, getting a good night’s sleep is an important goal, and one of the keys to getting a good night’s sleep is getting into the habit of exercising in the evening. A new study offers interesting findings on how short periods of movement in the evening can improve our sleep quality.
Evening exercises can increase sleep duration
A study conducted by the University of Otago in New Zealand has revealed that short periods of exercise in the evening can increase our sleep duration. The study showed that just 3 minutes of simple exercise every half hour in the evening can extend our sleeping duration by an average of 30 minutes. This finding may cause us to re-evaluate common concerns about the impact of evening exercises on sleep quality.
The study was conducted with 28 participants. One of the participants sat for four hours straight in the evening, while the other did 3-minute exercises every half hour on the evening. The exercises consisted of simple movements such as chair squats, calf raises, and standing knee raises. These exercises were designed to be easily done at home and did not require special equipment for the participants.
The results of the study showed that short-term movements increased sleep duration but did not affect sleep quality or frequency of waking up at night. This is considered a finding that suggests that light exercises done in the evening may not impair sleep quality.
